This is a panel from a strange comic I commenced in 2008 called 'Z-Factor'. It was going to be a 22 page homage to the X-men but told in my own way. I was inspired by a few LJ friends who had done various superhereo inspired parodies. My original intentions were to try an make a comic that pushed the techniques, that I was using at the time, to my limits, eg, colouring, inking, lettering. storytelling. For some reason I lost steam with the project, which was probably due to lack of response to the comic. I was also trying to offer the comic on a subscription basis on webcomics nation, which never really works with web comics. Perhaps now with iPads and such things could be different.
What ever happened, it was a bad reason to stop doing something, just because of a lack of feedback or interest. Months after I had done this a few people asked me about it and actually showed some interest. Perhaps I'll return to it one day. I have not even been able to find the orignal art or finished digital images which is scary. I think that they are backed up on a disc somewhere, I hope so anyway! I think there was around 4-5 pages in the end, and if I can find them I'll repost them.
Recently I have been trying to decide if I should make a change in my approach to making comics. Mostly in relation to how I draw and ink my comics. My standard method has been to use my technical pen in my A5 sketchbook. However recently I have come to think that perhaps this is too limiting. I want my original art to be drawn on a larger scale and bolder. Which is difficult to do well with a .05 tech pen.
I think the above image is a good example of how it could work as it was drawn larger and inked with my pentel brush pen. I was hopeful that these extra fine sharpies I had picked up recently may be the solution, but I have yet to find a paper that they work on nicely. I have been hearing a lot about the Tombow brush pens, and I have actually used one and they are amazing. My only concern is that i like to use materials thats are easily sourced locally. I do not want to have to conserve pens or hold back on using them.
Time will tell, I feel as if I still do not have enough room for comics drawing at the moment. I am not sure if that is because our current house is too small have an art area (by which I mean one space to store all my materials books etc) or that it has just been a busy year with multiple things pulling me in different directions. Soon I will be starting a full time job as a Librarian and strangely enough it will be my first time working 9-5 like that. All of my previous jobs have been casual, part time, or cash in hand. It will be interesting to see what this does to my creative output.
